Chevrolet's six-tier model lineup allows the Traverse to reach a broad swath of the market and appeal to a wide range of buyers. The Traverse provides spacious accommodations for seven or eight passengers, including a third row sized for adults. In our real-world testing, the all-wheel-drive Traverse High Country with the V-6 delivered 27 mpg, the best highway fuel consumption among its key competitors. Judge the Traverse by its class-average EPA-estimated fuel-economy numbers, and you'd be doing so with only half the information. 2018 Chevrolet Traverse: Nearer to Suburbania.Chevrolet Traverse, Subaru Ascent, and Mazda CX-9.The Traverse's suspension is tuned for a good balance between handling and ride comfort. Steering effort is low, but the system is precise and makes aiming the big SUV easy. Pick up the pace, however, and the big Chevy feels smaller than it is-poised, if not overtly athletic. When parking or maneuvering at low speed, the Traverse feels every bit its size. Speaking of which, the Traverse features what is perhaps the most seamless automatic stop/start feature we've tested. The cabin is so quiet that you need to steal a glance at the tachometer to ensure the engine is running while at a stoplight. The 3.6-liter V-6 pulls strongly and the Traverse is on the quicker end of its class. Engine, Transmission, and PerformanceĪ potent V-6 engine gives the Traverse its legs, and a slick-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission changes gears unobtrusively. That edges us to $51,710, but gets us a capable and mean-looking family bus. We chose all-wheel drive for all-weather capability, so we'll spec the heavy rubber floor mats of the Interior Protection package for $270. We would promptly paint over those shiny bits with the Redline package, because we dig the black wheels with the red stripes on them, but you could save yourself an easy $1845 by passing on that one. Settling for the Premier saves you $5100 versus the High Country but still nets (heated) middle-row captain's chairs, a Bose 10-speaker audio system, wireless phone charging in the center console, all of the driver-assistance technology that you could want, and a bunch of shiny exterior bits. By the time you go for leather and all-wheel drive (a $2000 option), you might as well step up to big leagues. With so much space for stretching out, every Traverse feels a little luxurious, but we like to go whole hog. Pricing and Which One to BuyĪs with many of its competitors, the Traverse can be optioned as anything from a budget shuttle to a luxury coach. The Traverse also gets Chevy's latest infotainment system, with HD backup and 360-degree cameras and a camera view to aid in trailer hook-up. The turbocharged four-cylinder drops from the bottom of the options list, leaving the 310-hp 3.6-liter V-6 as the only engine choice. What's New for 2020?Įxterior paint colors Black Currant, Havana Brown, and Pepperdust drop from the choices and Black Cherry joins the list. Its ride is comfortable over rough pavement, while the options list includes the upscale features such as an excellent infotainment system with a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. In our testing, the Traverse's V-6 engine proved powerful and fuel efficient. The Traverse has one of the roomiest third-row seats of any of its competitors, and the second row is more spacious than some of the first rows of those competitors. It's nearly as comfortable, in fact, as the minivans we recommend but that no one buys. In a people-hauling class, the Traverse stands out by virtue of its roomy interior.

The day that Lou mailed it to himself was the same day he had gone into Pickwick Studios and done a recording session with what we’d thought was the earliest ever version of “Heroin.” Much to our surprise, when we first heard it, it wasn’t that at all. When you heard this music for the first time, other than just taking it in, what were you listening for?ĭon Fleming: We thought it was going to be a tape we already had a copy of because of the date on it. Stern and Fleming spoke to Vulture about making sense of the Words & Music tape, Reed’s creative process, and working with the rock icon in his final days. Crucially, the recordings are available for listening in the library - part of Anderson’s goal to make Reed’s archive, which the NYPL acquired in 2017, readily accessible. “The last thing we wanted to do was approach it as a Hard Rock Cafe thing,” Stern says. The show features everything from old paperwork and memorabilia to copies of Reed’s poetry, the Words & Music tape, and other recordings. Many of those finds are currently on display at the New York Public Library, where Stern and Fleming have curated Caught Between the Twisted Stars, an exhibition of Reed’s archive. “We just continue to find things that are somewhat mind-blowing in the collection,” Fleming says. It’s the first in a series of archival Reed releases from the Seattle independent label Light in the Attic, coming on top of recent archival releases with Sony, Reed’s eventual label. It contains the earliest known version of “Heroin,” old takes on “Pale Blue Eyes” and “Men of Good Fortune” with vastly different lyrics, and near-mythic never-heard tracks like “Buttercup Song.” Stern and Fleming found it years ago and brought it to release with the help of Reed’s widow, the avant-garde artist Laurie Anderson (“She’s kind of our editor,” Fleming says). With abundant surprises, Words & Music is far more exciting than a typical demo release. The renditions, recorded with Reed’s future bandmate John Cale, are surprisingly bare, having more in common with the folk music of the West Village at the time than the innovative rock Reed would become known for. The songs were captured for what is known as a “poor man’s copyright”: Reed said “Words and music, Lou Reed” before each song in an attempt to own credit for the ideas. Stern and Fleming oversee Reed’s archive, and in those roles, they have just released Words & Music, May 1965, a collection of recently uncovered performances Reed recorded on tape. For Jason Stern and Don Fleming, it took the discovery of a long-lost artifact from the late rock musician and Velvet Underground singer. It can be hard to find something new to say about Lou Reed more than 60 years after his debut. There, orange wines (or “amber wines”, as Georgians prefer to call them) are an inextricable part of the cultural tradition. Like Winkler notes, the recent trend of making skin-on white wines isn’t remotely new in the nation of Georgia. Region: Languedoc, France | Variety: Chardonnay, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Marsanne, Mauzac, Muscat | Tasting Notes: Candied fruit, orange blossom, white flowers The wine’s structure and light, well-integrated tannins make it the perfect pairing for pre-dinner appetizers, Asian favorites, or slightly spicy Indian cuisine. Produced from an organically-farmed blend of Chardonnay, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Marsanne, Mauzac, and Muscat, this aromatic wine shows vibrant flavors of candied fruits, orange blossom, and white flowers, which harmoniously lead to a pleasant, slightly bitter finish that promises to excite the taste buds. Bertrand’s expression shows a fresh and easy-drinking side of skin-contact wine, rendering this bottle perfect for both novices and long-standing fans of orange wine alike. Produced by Languedoc winemaking giant Gerard Bertrand, Orange Gold pays homage to the great skin-macerated wines of The Republic of Georgia, first produced over 6,500 years ago. Region: Paso Robles, California, USA | Variety: Chenin Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Albarino, Vermentino, Albillo Mayor, Verdelho | Tasting Notes: Dried apricot, orange zest, stone fruit, almond skin Jones recommends pairing this award-winning wine with some funky cheese, like a bleu, or a hearty duck sausage. The 2021 version is still primarily those three varieties with Albarino, Vermentino, Verdelho, and Albillo Mayor added in. When we first recommended the 2019 bottling, Field Recordings used a mix of Chenin Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Gris. Honey and white flowers with notes of apricot and orange make this wine incredibly fun and crushable.” “And with a wine with an as-clear-as-it-gets name called SKINS, Andrew claims it'll make anyone a believer in non-red wine. “Winemaker Andrew Jones has been killing it in Paso Robles since 2007 with single vineyard site wines showcasing a sense of place and personality,” Hsu says. View On Vivino View On View On DrizlyĮric Hsu, co-founder of Coast and Valley wine bar in Brooklyn, New York, is partial to this blend from California's Central Coast. While most are dry, there are a good number of examples with residual sugar. Additionally, orange wines are made in both dry and sparkling styles. For a flavor-packed, more textured option, look to those with darker hues. For less grippy, more “white wine” style orange wines, look to those with paler hues and less skin contact. The exact hue and tannin profile of the wine depends on both the grape varieties used, as well as the amount of time that the juice spends macerating with the skins. Orange wines are made all over the world from a diverse variety of white wine grapes. "Wines have been made this way for millennia in Georgia but have recently become popular among winemakers and wine drinkers worldwide." "Orange wines are made with white grapes but in a way typical for reds, where the juice stays in contact with the skins after pressing, resulting in hues ranging from pale straw to golden to very dark orange-hence the name," Winkler says. New York-based sommelier and natural wine expert Doreen Winkler, who also founded orange wine club Orange Glou, is among those leading the charge. Depending on who you ask, orange wines are on the rise, possibly poised to be the new rosé. *Free Ultra HD texture packs available for download from the digital store. *Includes all available downloadable content for Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel as of March 24, 2015. Immigrant rights and agricultural worker advocates, such as the Farmworker Association of Florida, have publicly opposed SB1718. González said that some South Florida small-scale farmers, who were already reeling from COVID-19′s impact on agriculture, are not planning on producing the same amount of crops this year, because “they cannot risk their investment planting if there is not anyone to harvest it.” There are also workers who participate in other industries such as construction, said Claudia González, Homestead area coordinator for the Farmworker Association of Florida. Some live and work in Florida agriculture year round, while others are seasonal workers who follow crops to other states and come back for planting and harvesting. They made up 86.7% of the industry’s workforce, according to a 2021 report from the County’s Office of New Americans. In Miami-Dade, where over half the population is foreign-born, it’s immigrants who are working the fields, picking the crops, and tending to the nursery plants. But sales and shipping of indoor goods often takes place during the spring and are sent across the U.S., Canada, and the Caribbean. Much of the nursery industry grows products all year long. “When millions and millions of fresh fruits and vegetables ripen, there is a very short window in which to pick, transport from field to packing shed, clean, refrigerate, sort for the best quality, package in boxes or bags or crates according to the needs of the buyer, and arrange trucking to get the freshest produce in the hands of the final consumer,” Morgan said. Kimberly Morgan, associate professor of food and resource economics at the University of Florida/IFAS Southwest Florida Research and Education Center. Blessed with warm winter weather, South Florida is one of the very few places in the United States where crops are planted, tended, harvested and packed for shipping nationwide,” said Dr. consumers are now accustomed to, and expect, a wide variety of freshly picked, beautiful produce available year-round in their grocery stores. But a lot of produce, such as yellow squash, zucchini, green beans and tomatoes grow from fall through spring, when temperatures are cooler in South Florida but still warmer than many other parts of the country. Meanwhile, the season for tropical fruits such as mangoes, longan and lychees is traditionally during the summer. Some crops, like boniato and guava, can grow year round. The top crops by number of acres were vegetables, followed by nursery stock crops, snap beans, avocados, and sweet corn. Nearly three-quarters of the county’s 2,752 farms are nine acres or smaller, while another 21% had less than 50 acres each. Businesses range from farms that grow tropical fruits and vegetables to horticultural nurseries that grow trees, plants, and shrubs, as well as a small-scale animal production. The last US Department of Agriculture census, conducted in Miami-Dade County in 2017, depicts an agricultural industry dominated by small, family-owned farms that rank number two in the state in terms of market value of agricultural crop products sold, with over $827 million in agricultural sales, and number 16 nationwide. But the visas are costly to sponsor, and advocates say the program is ripe for the exploitation and forced labor of the participating workers, who heavily depend on their U.S.-based employers. The program is designed to alleviate worker shortages faced by farms across the United States. Florida already had the highest concentration of certified H2-A positions at 14% last government fiscal year, according to the US Department of Agriculture. They told the Miami Herald the law could cause Florida agricultural businesses to bring more temporary foreign workers through a federal government program for agriculture called H-2A. The extent of the law’s impact will become clearer as agricultural businesses need more hands to harvest winter and spring produce and seasonal workers return to harvest the fruits and vegetables, say farmers, workers and advocates. The legislation cracks down on undocumented labor and enacts a series of other immigration-related restrictions. The new Florida law, known as SB1718, came into effect on July 1. |
